William Morache

Wed, Sep 24    1pm

Please join the Historic Preservation program at GSAPP for a lecture by William (Bill) Morache, a NYC-based architectural historian and preservationist. His lecture will explore the West Harlem Historic District. Two stops north of Columbia on 1 train, the West Harlem Historic District is a hyper-local case study for GSAPP preservation students. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2022, this large district consists of late-nineteenth-century row houses and turn-of-the-century apartment buildings. Once geographically isolated, the neighborhood developed rapidly in tandem with the city’s first subway. It is now recognized for its Renaissance Revival architecture and social significance relating to Black history and culture. William Morache, author of the district’s nomination report, describes his research approach and the nomination process. He’ll share historical highlights from the district and discuss challenges, limitations, and opportunities inherent with the National Register framework.

William (Bill) Morache graduated from Columbia’s Historic Preservation program in 2014 and holds a B.A. in History from the University of Vermont. He worked as a facade restoration specialist at AJLP Consulting / Surface Design Group. Since 2017, he has been an independent practitioner under William Morache Historic Preservation LLC. His past work and specializations include architectural resource surveys, National Register nominations, Historic Tax Credit consulting, Landmark Preservation Commission permit applications, existing conditions documentation, architectural drafting, restoration design assistance, and historical research projects. His past and current clients include non-profits, private developers, architects, and other preservation professionals. He is a board member and co-Vice President of Preservation Alumni.

The Preservation Lecture Series is organized by the MS in Historic Preservation program.
