Dear Alumni,
As the School closed its fiscal year on June 30, I am writing with my sincere thanks to you for your incredible commitment to Columbia GSAPP since the start of my Deanship. With your support, we have now crossed several critical milestones in the school’s efforts to support students and engage alumni, and we have made crucial strides in our commitment to inclusivity and equity.
Since the start of the Design Create Engage campaign in 2016, gifts large and small in support of financial aid have totaled $5.5 million. This support—coupled with the school’s deep commitment to access—has enabled GSAPP to provide a 38% increase in financial aid disbursements to Masters students since 2014. Today, approximately 20% of the student body receives financial aid, with the average package providing 45% tuition relief. The highest awards now cover full tuition, and include support for the inaugural [**Norma Sklarek Scholars**](https://www.arch.columbia.edu/news/norma-merrick-sklarek-scholars-fund), who will join GSAPP in the Fall of 2021.
In response to the extraordinary circumstances of the past year, GSAPP created a [**Student Emergency Fund**](https://www.arch.columbia.edu/covid-19-emergency-fund), which enables students to request financial support for unexpected needs. In 2020-2021, the School expanded its original $250,000 budget to provide a total of over $290,000 in emergency aid to 195 students. GSAPP has extended this support by renewing the Emergency Fund for the 2021-2022 year. Gifts in support of this initiative may be made [here](https://arch.givenow.columbia.edu/).
To encourage our most generous donors to support endowed financial aid funds, GSAPP has launched a [**$2 million Challenge**](https://www.arch.columbia.edu/campaign/financial-aid), providing a 1:1 match to all new gifts made to financial aid endowments. In 2021, we were honored to create new scholarship funds with gifts from **Joshua Pan** ’67 M.Arch, Vishal and **Rina Bhagwati** ‘98 MSRED, and **Leslie Herman** ‘04 HP ‘19 PhD, as well as the first endowed Research Assistantship from the IDC Foundation. To date, we have raised $1.1 million towards the Match. To learn more about our endowed financial aid funds and the extraordinary donors who fund these gifts, please visit [here](https://www.arch.columbia.edu/campaign/financial-aid).
Strengthening Career Services programming for our graduating students has been essential, and we have added new staff and new opportunities through expanded events, as well as key collaborations among all of the GSAPP Program administrators. In January 2022, GSAPP will host its very first all-school Career Fair. Professional support has also extended to our alumni community: GSAPP recently launched the [**Avery Workshops**](https://www.arch.columbia.edu/events/2392-avery-workshop-brand-management) program under the leadership of the Alumni Board, with programming specifically directed at post-graduation professional development opportunities. Please join us on July 15 for a conversation on Brand Management featuring GSAPP Alumni [**Rajiv Fernandez**](https://www.linkedin.com/in/rajiv-fernandez-88078420/) ‘10 M.Arch, [**Aimee Chang**](https://www.linkedin.com/in/aimee-chang-7682019a/) ‘06 M.Arch, and [**Nasozi Kakembo**](https://www.linkedin.com/in/nkakembo/) ‘08 MSUP.
We extend our gratitude again to you for stepping in to support the students in the most meaningful ways since March 2020. Mentorship is regularly cited as one of the most powerful and influential connections between students and alumni. [**Tuesday Talks**](https://www.arch.columbia.edu/events/2326-tuesday-talks) continues to be our most popular program and has created more than 250 conversations for our students. The annual mentorship program, initiated by the GSAPP Alumni Board, will enter its 6th year this Fall. Your support and advice is so impactful, and we encourage your continued participation.
The school has continued an expanded **Alumni Incubator Prize** program in 2021-2022, which is dedicated to supporting new forms of anti-racist professional practice and seeks to fund alumni-led initiatives that critically redefine community engagement and participation. In 2021, GSAPP will award 10 prizes of $10,000 per selected project. [Applications will be accepted](https://www.arch.columbia.edu/research/gsapp-incubator) through August 31.
We are pleased to welcome the newest members of the [**GSAPP Alumni Board**](https://www.arch.columbia.edu/alumni/board), whose dedication and commitment to GSAPP will be so meaningful to the School: **Diane Branch** ’03 MSRED, **Cecily King** ’15 MSRED, **Parul Sharma** ’15 MSAUD, and **Hala Abukhodair** ’20 MSAUD. Please join me in welcoming these incredible alumni to their leadership roles.
I am heartened by the continued support of our community and hope you share my pride in these important successes. By the start of the academic year, GSAPP will launch an annual Alumni Survey to hear feedback that will help inform our programming. I look forward to sharing this with you.
Warm regards,
Amale
