Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (Columbia GSAPP) is thrilled to announce that Mireia Luzárraga has been appointed as Assistant Professor of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. She will teach in the Architecture programs and coordinate the Master of Architecture Core I studios beginning in the Fall 2024 semester.

Mireia Luzárraga’s body of work has inaugurated paths for architectural design to address intersecting critical priorities. With a strong focus on fostering more democratic environments, post-anthropocentric ecologies, and egalitarian societies, she incorporates feminist thought, and queer and posthuman studies into a practice that produces buildings, installations, furniture, exhibitions, and books. Luzárraga is founder and principal of TAKK Architecture, with Alejandro Muiño, a research-driven design office based in Barcelona and New York. TAKK’s work includes projects for the Musée Cantonal de Design et d’Arts Appliqués Contemporains in Lausanne, Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno IVAM, and the Centro de Arte Santa Mónica in Barcelona, among others. Luzárraga is the recipient of numerous awards, and her work has been presented in museums and biennials internationally, including the Vitra Design Museum, the Mak Center for Art & Architecture in Los Angeles, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rabat, the Venice Biennale, the Tallinn Architecture Biennale, the Roma Architecture Festival 2022, and others. Luzárraga speaks regularly about her work, and also participated in the second edition of the GSAPP AFFIRMATIONS series under the theme of “Material Ecologies” alongside Fuminori Nousaku (Fuminori Nousaku Architects) and Mio Tsuneyama (Studio mnm) in 2023. Mireia Luzárraga is a committed and inspirational teacher who first joined GSAPP as a Dean’s Visiting Assistant Professor in Spring 2023, and her expertise and passion further enriches the School’s pedagogical culture. She previously served as Master Tutor at the University of Alicante and the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC), Spain, and was the Kengo Kuma Visiting Professor in the University of Tokyo, Japan in 2024.

At GSAPP, architecture is understood as inextricably linked to environmental, technological, and political action. It is approached as an ecosystem of critical practices where design, discourse, and activism are inseparable. GSAPP is known globally for its commitment to anticipating the future of the disciplines of the built environment by situating experimental thought in the transitioning across scales from the molecular to the planetary. Luzarraga, who has been selected by a dedicated GSAPP faculty search committee, will contribute to the School’s agenda, identity, and leadership.
