Today is the GSAPP Open House! Please join us in welcoming prospective students as they visit the School to learn more about our programs, faculty, and student community.

A special feature this year is “Cloud”, a student-designed inflatable pavilion made for The Outside In Project led by faculty Laurie Hawkinson and Galia Solomonoff. Don’t miss the project in Avery Plaza and its entry into the building at Avery 408.

The Open House Lecture will be delivered by Kate Orff (GSAPP, Columbia Climate School, SCAPE, with a response by Dean Andrés Jaque.

Kate Orff’s activist and visionary work on design for climate dynamics has been shared and developed in collaboration with arts institutions, governments, and scholars worldwide. She is a Professor at Columbia GSAPP and Director of the Urban Design Program, where she coordinates complex interdisciplinary studios centered on urban systems of the future. Her design studios and seminars aim to discover new ways of integrating social life, infrastructure, urban form, biodiversity and community-based change. She was awarded a 2017 MacArthur Fellowship.

Congratulations to Dean Emeritus Bernard Tschumi, who is the AIA Center for Architecture 2024 Common Bond Honoree for the main architecture recognition! Additional GSAPP connections among the honorees include former student Michael Henry Adams for his work in preservation, and current student Liberty Chapman as the recipient of the three 2024 Common Bond Scholarships. The annual gala takes place on Thursday, October 24 at Chelsea Piers.

• Faculty Mario Gooden in conversation with Adjunct Professor and choreographer Jonathan Gonzalez at the American Academy of Arts and Letters on the occasion of his work Spectral Dances and to discuss spectral qualities of the past that exist inside the built environment and how these traces become part of choreographic practice. October 26.

• Faculty Lindy Roy joins authors of Designing for Empathy, Aybars Aşçı and Julia Higdon, alongside panelists Michelle Samura (Santiago Canyon College) and Elizabeth de Freitas (Adelphi University) to discuss how architectural design influences human behavior, emotions, and learning processes.
