For the thirteenth installment of The Library is Open, Matt Shaw presents his book American Modern: Architecture; Community; Columbus, Indiana (Phaidon, 2024). He will be joined by photographer Iwan Baan, whose work is featured in the book, and respondent Jorge Otero-Pailos (GSAPP).

Matt Shaw, a Columbus, Indiana native, is an author, editor, and columnist. American Modern: Architecture; Community; Columbus, Indiana explores Columbus’s optimistic program of bold new architecture and landscapes, initiated by the legendary industrialist J. Irwin Miller and local leaders, and the generations-long quest to develop the ideal American city through design excellence.

Join Professor Reinhold Martin and Claire Zimmerman to celebrate the release of their co-edited volume, Architecture against Democracy: Histories of the Nationalist International, which received support from the Buell Center, among others. This fall, the HP-UP joint studio traveled to Ghana for the 5-day workshop: Earthen Architecture, under the theme: Heritage, Climate and Built Environment. At the event, faculty Erica Avrami highlighted the importance of using indigenous building materials for construction and the learnings from Ashanti Architecture. KNUST, a university partner at the workshop compiled a video documenting the event, which included round table discussions, exhibitions, a charrette, and guided tours around selected areas in the Ashanti region.
