Columbia University’s Board of Trustees has announced the appointment of Jennifer L. Mnookin as the next President of Columbia University, effective July 1, 2026. GSAPP welcomes President-designate Mnookin as she prepares to assume this role.

GSAPP welcomes this year’s Dean’s Visiting Professors, joining the School to contribute new perspectives through teaching, dialogue, and experimentation across programs and beyond.

The Library is Open welcomes V. Mitch McEwen for a conversation on her latest book, Erasure by Design: Racial Protocols of Displacement, Demolition, and Extraction, with Jack Halberstam (Columbia). They will be joined by Joanna Joseph and Isabelle Kirkham-Lewitt of Columbia Books on Architecture and the City.

V. Mitch McEwen is an assistant professor at Princeton University’s School of Architecture and principal of Harlem-based design practice Atelier Office. She is one of ten co-founders of the Black Reconstruction Collective. McEwen’s design work has been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Venice Architecture Biennale.

• GSAPP’s Center for Spatial Research, led by Faculty Laura Kurgan, in partnership with Columbia’s Department of History, has received a new grant from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation to support the continued development, teaching, and public use of Mapping Historical New York: A Digital Atlas. • Lasse Rau, Ph.D. Candidate in Architecture, publishes a peer-reviewed article Translating Land: Cultural Development Encounters in Canadian and Alaska Indigenous Land Studies, 1968–1981 in Planning Perspectives Journal.

• Carolyn Swope, Ph.D. Candidate in Urban Planning, is awarded the Founder’s Prize at the Social Science History Association Annual Conference, recognizing the best article published in the journal Social Science History on The Spatial Configuration of Segregation, Elite Fears of Disease, and Housing Reform in Washington, D.C.’s Inhabited Alleys.

• Mahdi Sabbagh, Ph.D. Candidate in Architecture, publishes an article on Building from the Bottom Up, reflecting on the state of architecture and its political, material, and social conditions over the past year. Read here.

• Faculty Andrew Dolkart and alumni Ken Lustbader ’93 MSHP, Jay Shockley, and Amanda Davis ’06 MSHP will receive the Preservation League of New York State Pillar of New York Award for their transformative work documenting and preserving NYC’s LGBTQ historic sites.

• Faculty Albena Yaneva wins the 2025 DigitalFUTURES Mark Cousins Theory Award, recognizing unconventional contributions to architectural theory through various reflexive and critical forms and writing.

• Faculty Lydia Kallipoliti is featured in PIN-UP magazine for The Metabolic Home, developed with Areti Markopoulou and presented at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia.

• Faculty Mireia Luzárraga (TAKK) has been selected by Forbes Women as one of the 50 Architects to Watch in 2026. (TAKK) has been also shortlisted for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Awards 2026 for the project 10K House. (pictured)
