The 2020-2021 GSAPP Incubator Prize supports the development of innovative alumni-led projects by offering direct financial support to selected recipients. The 2020–2021 cycle has been launched with an additional 25 prizes of **$10,000 each** to be distributed over two years and is dedicated to the theme of *Climate, Health, and Cities*. The first speaker in the series is Justin Romeo ‘18 MSUP, Director of Special Projects, Regional & Strategic Planning at New York City Department of Transportation. Hear him discuss the impact of the pandemic on a city service that affects every community in New York.

Columbia World Projects

Columbia World Projects seeks to hire a Short Term Casual - Program Assistant to support the day-to-day activities of the initiative. The Program Assistant will work primarily on CWP’s “Southern Urbanisms” initiative, looking at questions around housing, infrastructure, and community engagement in the global south, where theories and practices established in urban settings of the global north may not suffice.

The Urban Design Forum

The Urban Design Forum is seeking applicants for Forefront 2020: Cooperative Works, to explore how to support minority-owned businesses and workers of color, expand worker cooperatives, and democratize economic resources to build a more inclusive economy.

In Phase I, Fellows will partner with the Deputy Mayor for Strategic Policy Initiatives and the Mayor’s Office of M/WBE to explore how to create economic opportunity through climate investment. In Phase II, Fellows will work in independent teams to investigate broader avenues for the design, planning, and development communities to advance an inclusive economic recovery.

Call for Publication Essays
Visual Ecologies of Place-Making
Deadline: July 15

Visual Ecologies of Place-Making will explore strategies and ecologies of place-making across three sections connected to 1) ritual and performance, 2) exclusion and appropriation, and 3) recovery and loss.

Seeking proposals for essays that address these themes from diverse perspectives, across disciplines, cultures, and time periods. Special interest in case studies from outside of Europe/the United States and projects that can address one of the following areas:

Indigenous experiences of, perspectives on, and relationships to place

Place and place-making during the COVID-19 pandemic

Climate change

Black Lives Matter and related movements

2020-21 Public Design Fellow
The Public Policy Lab
Deadline: 5 p.m. on July 20

The Public Policy Lab is accepting submissions for their 2020-21 Public Design Fellowship program until 5 p.m. on July 20, 2020. Fellows will participate in PPL collaborations with multiple government agencies to design and test policy and programs that help shelter staff better assist homeless New Yorkers in finding permanent housing; coordinate services for school children living in temporary housing; enable New Yorkers to save and share documents in order to apply for public programs; evaluate NYC public housing staff-scheduling processes; and improve transportation services for school children living in temporary housing and their families.

Seed Grant
Tamer Fund for Social Ventures
Deadline: August 15

The Tamer Fund for Social Ventures provides seed grants of up to $25,000 to nonprofit, for-profit, and hybrid early-stage Columbia University affiliated social and environmental ventures.

Social or environmental ventures are defined as those working to solve a social or environmental problem. In general, social and environmental for-profit ventures produce products and/or services that either focus on addressing the needs of low-income communities or customers with an explicit purpose of increasing the welfare of these groups, alleviate a market failure and create significant public goods or benefits that are not wholly captured in the price charged by the business, or have attracted funding for the business by investors or grant makers who are seeking measurable social or environmental impacts.
