Jeronimo Aguilar Gutierrez ‘15 MSAUD is the VP of Pricing & Procurement at Bolster, a data-driven design-build firm on a mission to create a “smart” renovation experience. He will discuss how developing an early career in the construction industry can prepare entrepreneurial architects with the necessary business skills to launch their own firms in the future.

Nicolas Medrano, AIA ‘07 M.Arch is an Associate Architect at SOM whose award-winning projects include 2019’s NEX Tower, awarded the Asia Pacific Awards for Excellence by the Urban Land Institute (ULI) and Best Green Development by MIPIM Asia. Nic will present his current biopharma project in Singapore and share insights on designing for a government that prizes sustainability and public space.

Getting Started with Community Work

In this week’s Alumni Conversation, Nisha Baliga, AICP ‘05 MSUP and Betsy Maclean ‘05 MIA/'06 MSUP, Co-Executive Directors at Hester Street, encouraged those interested in social justice and community development to learn effective strategies from experienced organizers and understand the existing network before starting a new initiative of your own. Explore the NYC Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) website for ways to get involved with a neighborhood development board.

The Architectural League invites you to submit photographs, videos, or drawings accompanied by short written observations about the spaces around you, with the goal of creating a visual archive that captures the relationship between society and the built environment in this unprecedented time.

The League will review, edit, and select reports to be published initially on our Instagram account on a rolling basis and, eventually, on archleague.org and in our weekly newsletter.

Call for Course Proposals
The School of Making Thinking
Deadline: July 29

The School of Making Thinking is now accepting proposals for artists and thinkers to teach a virtual class for our Fall 2020 Semester in partnership with Abrons Arts Center (a performing and visual arts center in the Lower East Side). SMT classes seek to bring rigorous thinking into conversation with experimental pedagogies by combining intellectual practices (reading texts, writing, dialogue, etc.) with artistic practices (dance, theater, design, film, etc).

COVID-19 Grants
Center for History in the Public Interest
Deadline: August 15

The Albert Lepage Center for History in the Public Interest at Villanova University will fund up to 10 projects that creatively engage with the broad range of questions, concerns, policies and practices raised by past pandemics and how historical study can further public understanding of the current Covid-19 crisis.

The Center is particularly interested in proposals that adopt a global approach and highlight issues of race, gender, power and structural inequality.

Territorial Empathy studies the different types of conflicts that affect territories around the world, from Central America where drought and climate change are propelling migration to the United States…to New York City where children attend the most racially segregated public schools in the nation.
