Alumni Conversations is a talk series that invites GSAPP alumni to speak about a current or recent project through the lens of climate and social justice. This series is an opportunity for students to expand their network, become familiar with a range of professions, and gain insight into the job market.

The new season of kicks off with presentations by Ruth Benjamin ‘10 M.Arch and Jennifer Romeo '12 M.Arch, President and Vice President of the GSAPP Alumni Board, for a frank behind-the-scenes look at what work has been like during the pandemic at their respective companies.

Ruth Benjamin has been an Architect at Industry City in Brooklyn since 2018, following many years contributing to the teams at Marvel Architects and AECOM.

Established in the 1890s, Industry City began as a massive manufacturing and distribution hub. Since the 2010s, it has undergone a renaissance and serves as a creative complex for an ever-changing landscape of work, food, and experiences. Ruth will walk us through how the 16 building, 35 acre campus has been thoughtfully recalibrated in response to the pandemic.

Jennifer Romeo is an architect and senior designer at Perkins Eastman in New York. She will be discussing how, within a week’s time, the pandemic impacted the oversight and construction of McKelvey Hall at Washington University in St. Louis. Learn more about the project here.

As the pandemic began, Architects, construction teams, and partners quickly had to pivot to new perspectives and approaches to managing construction administration when being on-site was no longer an option.
