Archi-Union Architects

Mon, Feb 12, 2018    6:30pm

A lecture by Philip Yuan, Archi-Union Architects.
Response by Christoph Kumpusch.

Founded in 2003 by Dr. Philip F. Yuan, Archi-Union Architects is a Shanghai-based architectural design firm. Archi-Union is known for combining global trends in architecture and the local traditional approach. They have coined the term ‘Digital Tectonics’ to describe their low-tech digital fabrication method which merges the concepts of tectonic construction and ecology that are catalyzed through a parametric design process, in essence combining digital technology and craftsmanship. Archi-Union’s projects have been reported by many international and national architectural design media, like T+A, UED, UA, Arquitectura Viva, Abitare China, AD China, Dezeen and Archdaily.

Philip F. Yuan focuses on research in digital design and intelligent construction. He has been awarded a variety of prizes including the 2014 Wienerberger Brick Award, 2015 Shenzhen Biennale Popularity Award and 2016 Gold and Silver Prize of Architectural Design, etc. He has published more than 120 theses on academic architectural journals and magazines and 9 books including From Diagrammatic Thinking to Digital Fabrication, Digital Fabrication and Computational Design. He is a Professor and PhD Advisor of CAUP at Tongji University; Co-chair of Built Environment Technology Center, CAUP; Council Member of Architects Sector, Architectural Society of China; Council Member of Digital Fabrication Sector, Architectural Society of China; and Director of Academic Committee of Shanghai Digital Fabrication Engineering Technology Center.

Organized by Columbia GSAPP.
Free and open to the public.
