Columbia GSAPP is excited to announce that Professor Weiping Wu has been appointed Interim Dean of the Columbia GSAPP, beginning January 1, following the conclusion of Amale Andraos’s tenure as Dean. In addition, the School is pleased to announce that Professor Mario Gooden ‘90 M.Arch has been appointed as the Interim Director of the Master of Architecture Program, also beginning January 1.

Columbia GSAPP is pleased to announce the appointment of Associate Professor Lucia Allais as the new Director of the Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture at Columbia University. Allais will assume the role in January 2022 and succeeds Professor Reinhold Martin, who has led the Buell Center since 2008. Martin will return to scholarship and teaching full time, and he continues to direct the History and Theory Sequence in the School’s Master of Architecture program.

When Joshua Jih Pan ’67GSAPP traveled to the United States to continue his architecture studies in 1963, his family had no refrigerator, no television, and no telephone. In the decades that followed, Taiwan would see extraordinary growth. So would Joshua.

Today, he sits at the helm of one of the largest architecture and planning firms in Taiwan, recognized in the region and beyond. As JJP Architects & Planners celebrates forty years in business, its founder has made a generous donation to GSAPP’s Design Create Engage campaign — the largest gift to date from a donor in Asia. His gift will endow a scholarship that will impact students from around the world for generations to come.

With the leadership of the GSAPP Alumni Board, we are pleased to announce the creation of the Regional Ambassadors Program. Ambassadors will be invited to share their unique stories – including their GSAPP experience and professional path – with prospective applicants through a series of information sessions. They will also help GSAPP congratulate admitted students in Spring 2022, and welcome enrolling students from their region. • The Avery Review has launched its first open call for editors and is currently seeking applications for up to two contributing editors and two editors at large. Applications due November 28, 2021.

• Applications are now being accepted for the 2022-2023 Obama Foundation Scholars Program at Columbia University through December 22 at 5PM ET.

GSAPP welcomes members of the Class of 2020 to fill out this brief survey in order for us to learn more about your current employment status. Your feedback will guide the direction of the Career Services and Alumni Office.

GSAPP Career Services is organizing a Virtual Employer Networking Event for company representatives to meet with current students for informational, recruiting, and networking purposes. Employers will have the chance to offer information sessions to groups of students, meet with students one-on-one, and review resumes and portfolios. Employers must be available for a minimum duration of 2 hours during the event.

Materialization of Death

Have you ever asked Mycelium what it wants to be? In Episode 002 of the rAADio podcast, Devansh Mehta (‘21 AAD) and Benjamin Akhavan ('21 AAD) question the materialization of death through the demonstration of humans exercising control over their own deaths. The materiality and deaths of other species to manipulate our death is complemented by the analysis of understanding the systems required to support the externalized material processes of bodies which humans use to avoid death. Marie-Christine Dimitri ('21 AAD) interviews David Benjamin to understand the ethical implications of using other species in our architecture.
