Columbia GSAPP is delighted to announce the MSRED Gala will return Thursday, May 12, 2022 in the iconic Low Library. We are pleased to have the opportunity to come together in celebration of the 2022 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient, Ernst Valery ‘04 MSRED, Co-Managing Member of SAA | EVI, honoring his leadership in the industry and his commitment and service to the Columbia community.

All proceeds from the evening will support the Aequo Scholarship Fund, a newly established scholarship intended to support a breadth of voices and backgrounds for the Masters of Science in Real Estate Development Program’s most promising applicants.

We are seeking nomination for new members of the Alumni Board to be actively engaged in providing leadership for major alumni initiatives and serve as important liaisons between alumni peers and the school. The deadline for nominations from alumni across all programs, generations, and geography is May 20.

Applications are now open for the Community Fellowship Program, which aims to promote educational ties between the School and surrounding communities of color in response to students’ desire to learn more about the urban environment in which the School is situated. Two $20,000 fellowships will be awarded to local practitioners in exchange for Fellow participation in lectures, programs, and classes at GSAPP. Applications can be submitted online by May 11, 2022.

Alumni are welcome and encouraged to share this opportunity with eligible candidates.

On May 18, 2022, Columbia University will confer an honorary degree on James Polshek—Dean of Columbia GSAPP from 1972 to 1987—alongside Hillary Rodham Clinton, Carla Hayden, William Kentridge, Yo-Yo Ma, and Patti Smith during its graduation ceremony. Alumna Jodi Kantor will receive the University Medal for Excellence.

Columbia News asked Interim Dean Weiping Wu, along with professors and students, their thoughts on various aspects of the city’s built environment, where they go to escape urban chaos, and what they think is the biggest problem New York faces in terms of climate change and environmental impact.

“In a school anchored in the built environment,” says Interim Dean Wu, “GSAPP faculty and students expand knowledge and understanding on how people inhabit buildings, move through space, and form attachment to places. Climate change, social and racial justice, and critical technology permeate GSAPP pedagogies and practices, a vision articulated by former Dean Andraos that we continue to elevate.”

Students from Columbia GSAPP’s M.S. in Urban Planning and Master in Architecture programs are among the recipients of the prestigious 2021 Morgan Stanley Community Graduate Fellowship and the City of New York-sponsored 2020-2021 Community Planning Fellowship Program.
