Columbia GSAPP has organized a day of programming that offers Reunion Alumni a glimpse of what’s new at Avery since your last visit. You can find a few details of what to expect below.

Most importantly, though, the day is designed as an opportunity to reconnect with people and spaces that were formative for so many. If you aren’t able to join us in person, we hope you will still participate by sending photos and memories through this link.

On May 2nd, students of the Outside In Project, a Building Science and Technology elective co-led by Galia Solomonoff ‘94 M.Arch and Laurie Hawkinson, finished erecting the Web, a temporary pavilion on Avery Plaza.

The Web will be the site of this year’s All Alumni Party on Friday, June 3rd and Reunion Alumni are welcome to explore the pavilion during the day Saturday.

Adam Susaneck ‘20 M.Arch will present research from his ongoing project Segregation by Design, which builds on the work of Richard Rothstein’s book, The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How our Government Segregated America and Heather McGhee’s The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together. Supported by the 2021-2022 GSAPP Incubator Prize, Segregation by Design serves as a visual companion to how public policies have impacted communities and aims to provide materials and support to local groups opposing freeway expansion today.

We invited Untapped New York to design a walking tour for Columbia GSAPP alumni and family that takes us from Morningside campus to Columbia’s newest buildings in Manhattanville. Untapped New York was founded in 2009 by Michelle Young ‘12 MSUP, who completed the Shape of Two Cities: New York / Paris certificate program prior to obtaining her degree in urban planning at GSAPP.

Last year, Untapped Cities partnered with Columbia Magazine to create a guide to Manhattanville.
