Dear GSAPP Community,
I wanted to be sure you saw the great news that Minouche Shafik has been named the 20th President of Columbia University, starting on July 1, which marks an important milestone and moment of transition for the University. Jonathan Lavine, chair of the Columbia Board of Trustees, called Shafik “the perfect candidate: a brilliant and able global leader, a community builder, and a preeminent economist who understands the academy and the world beyond it.”
Minouche Shafik is a scholar on economics and public policy, and is the author of “What We Owe Each Other: A New Social Contract for a Better Society”, in which she reflects on the need for mutual support in facing contemporary defiance.
As we prepare to welcome her as the University’s next leader, I invite you to learn more about incoming President Shafik through this short video. Among other interesting facts, you’ll discover that she already has a connection to GSAPP as the parent of a 2015 Urban Planning graduate!
I wish you all a very nice weekend, the first in this very promising Spring semester.
Sincerely,
Andrés Jaque
Dean
