The Advanced Architectural Design program midterm reviews take place every afternoon this week, and faculty and students are invited to join the sessions. Please see the online schedule for locations, times, and guest critics.

Tom Slater joined Columbia GSAPP in the Fall 2022 semester as Professor in both the M.S. and Ph.D. programs in Urban Planning, and took on the role of Interim Director of the Ph.D. in UP program for the Fall 2023 semester. He has led the program with great care during this transitional period as Professor Weiping Wu took on new responsibilities as the University’s Vice Provost for Academic Programs.

Slater trained as an urban geographer and works on a range of urban issues—particularly gentrification and displacement, urban marginality, territorial stigmatization, critical urban theory, and housing justice movements—that are of great relevance in our current political and social environment, and influential both within and beyond the field of Urban Planning in shaping current urban and housing policies.

• Congratulations to Erica Avrami, James Marston Fitch Assistant Professor of Historic Preservation, who was appointed by President Biden as Expert Member to the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation earlier this month.

• Faculty Mimi Hoang was interviewed by Julia Gamolina for Madame Architect on the topics of radical empathy, regional projects and spatial experiences.

• Launching this week: two publications co-edited by summer AAD faculty, Elise Misao Hunchuck: “Radical Rituals 45°N 1°W – 45°N 7°E” (edited by Elise Misao Hunchuck, Berta Gutiérrez Casaos, and Alkistis Thomidou. Published by PUNCH Bucharest), and “The AI Anarchies Book” (edited by Clara Herrmann, Elise Misao Hunchuck, and Maya Indira Ganesh.
