The Brooklyn-based real estate development firm **Tankhouse**, co-founded by **Sam Alison-Mayne** ’13 MSRED and **Sebastian Mendez**, specializes in multifamily housing and is committed to joining expertise in architecture and urban design with finance, construction, management, and education. Their latest project, [Vanderbilt 144](https://www.144vanderbilt.com/) was designed by the architecture firm SO-IL led by GSAPP faculty Jing Liu and Florian Idenburg, and is defined by its bold pink precast concrete facade, interconnected courtyards, terraces, and a raised public square—elements that create shared spaces for residents. The project explores tropes of urban housing, integrating communal areas that connect residents with their surroundings. “New York is supposedly the greatest, most competitive city on Earth,” says Sam Alison-Mayne... “Competition usually breeds the best solutions for things – but not when it comes to housing.” Read more in a feature article about the project written by Oliver Wainwright for [*The Guardian*](https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2025/jan/28/so-il-tankhouse-housing-new-york-big-apple). -----
