The summer semester continues with studios, workshops, lectures, and courses in full swing—shaping ideas, testing formats, and keeping conversations moving across the school and city.

Jingru (Cyan) Cheng works across architecture, anthropology, and filmmaking. Her practice follows drifting bodies—from rural migrant workers to forms of water—to confront intensified social injustice and ecological crisis. Chen Zhan is an architect, anthropologist, and independent filmmaker, trained at the Architectural Association and SOAS University of London. Cyan and Chen’s recent solo exhibitions include HOW MUCH WATTAGE IS ONE HANDBREADTH OF WATER at Storefront for Art and Architecture (New York, 2025) and RIPPLE RIPPLE RIPPLING at the Architectural Association (London, 2024). Their film work received the Architecture Short Film Award at the Milano Design Film Festival (2024) and the Best Short Film at the Venice Architecture Film Festival (2023), among others. Together they are Canadian Centre for Architecture’s 2024–2025 CCA-Mellon Multidisciplinary Researchers on field research as a land-dependent practice.

On view through June 27, Prospecting Ocean by Armin Linke is a multimedia artistic research project that investigates the technocratic entanglement of industry, science, politics, and economics at the frontiers of ocean exploration.

The presentation of Prospecting Ocean marks Linke’s first U.S. solo exhibition in 20 years, transforming GSAPP’s Arthur Ross Architecture Gallery into a site for investigating the spatial, political, and technological dimensions of ocean governance. Through newly commissioned video, photographic, and fieldwork across institutions and infrastructures, Linke examines how the ocean is rendered legible, measurable, and available for extraction.

• GSAPP faculty, including Alessandro Orsini, Hilary Sample (MOS), and Amaia Sánchez-Velasco + Jorge Valiente-Oriol (Grandeza Studio) are among the participants in the upcoming edition of the Chicago Architecture Biennial. Titled SHIFT: Architecture in Times of Radical Change, this year’s edition explores “new grounds for the interpretation and design of our built environments.”

• GSAPP’s Columbia Books on Architecture and the City presents two forthcoming titles that interrogate the frameworks of architectural authorship and erasure, now available for preorder. Faculty Mark Wasiuta’s The Archival Exhibition: A Decade of Research at the Arthur Ross Architecture Gallery, 2006–2016 both records the possibilities of the archival exhibition as a mode, method, and problem of architecture, and is itself a record of a decade-long curatorial project. Also forthcoming, V. Mitch McEwen’s Erasure by Design: Racial Protocols of Displacement, Demolition, and Extraction examines spatial tools of architecture as mechanisms of racial displacement and extraction.

• nARCHITECTS, led by Eric Bunge and Mimi Hoang, was featured in Abitare and The Architect’s Newspaper for recent projects that combine climate-resilient design with public space— from a CLT house upstate to flood-adaptive pavilions in Manhattan and Hoboken.
