Laurie Hawkinson (GSAPP, Smith-Miller Hawkinson Architects) discusses five of her projects with the people who served as key collaborators for them: Jonathan R. Laurie Hawkinson is an Architect, Professor Emeritus of Architecture at GSAPP, and serves on the Public Design Commission for New York City. She is a co-founder with Henry Smith-Miller of Smith-Miller + Hawkinson Architects. Her diverse body of work spans scales and typologies, expanding beyond architecture’s conventional boundaries.

Lucia Allais (GSAPP), Forrest Meggers (Princeton), and Michael Faciejew (Dalhousie University) discuss their latest edited book, After concrete, in conversation with contributor Dan Steingart (Columbia).

Concrete is a highly transformative building material. Its story begins in the ancient world, where early builders discovered that mixing lime with volcanic ash created a remarkably strong substance. The invention of Portland cement in the 19th century, and concrete’s systematic reinforcement with steel in the 20th, further revolutionized modern construction. While concrete remains a hard-to-replace material, the huge carbon footprint and environmental impact of its production have become the focus of much recent research and concern.

This volume looks at the future of concrete from different perspectives, investigating how its sustainability will draw from innovative research and from past solutions.

The Library is Open is a lunchtime series featuring recently published works and their authors, curated by Bart-Jan Polman, Director of Exhibitions and Public Programming and Curator of the Arthur Ross Architecture Gallery at Columbia GSAPP. Hosted in a central location in Avery Hall, the LiO series honors GSAPP’s historical connection to Avery Library, the world’s largest Architecture library.
