Columbia GSAPP Ross Architecture Gallery: Stagecraft
Feb 9 – Mar 10, 2017
Stagecraft: Models and Photos
Arthur Ross Architecture Gallery

Opening remarks with Kenneth Frampton, James Ewing, Amale Andraos, and Irene Sunwoo at 6:30pm, reception to follow in Buell Hall 300S.

Stagecraft: Models and Photos explores the synergy between architectural models and photography as a wellspring of architectural invention. The Arthur Ross Architecture Gallery presents newly commissioned photographs by James Ewing alongside six models of significant 20th-century buildings. Culled from the archives of the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, the models were produced during the 1990s and early 2000s by students of historian and Columbia GSAPP Professor Kenneth Frampton as a pedagogical exploration of the history of architectural tectonics. Experimenting with a range of photographic techniques, Ewing’s photographs of these models invite a reexamination of how architectural creativity and thinking unfold through the picturing of objects and the crafting of images.

Stagecraft: Models and Photos is on view at the Arthur Ross Architecture Gallery from February 9th to March 10th.
