Sketches on Everlasting Plastics unfolds new coordinates, perspectives, openings, references for and beyond the exhibition Everlasting Plastics, first produced for the 18th International Architecture Exhibition at the 2023 Biennale di Venezia, curated by Tizziana Baldenebro and Lauren Leving. Sketches brings together a range of thinkers, formats, and methodologies exploring the infinite ways in which plastic permeates our bodies and our world. The collected texts offer intimate and political accounts of our fraught relationship with the material that—rather than making a case for or against plastic—attempt to register our ongoing relationship to it, its impact on material cultures, and the harm and possibilities it entangles for our collective futures. Embracing the informality and the intimacy of the sketch-as a form and format for thinking together, as a form and format attached to an ongoing temporality—the hope is that the many associations, scales, and temporalities of plastics, both how we shape and are shaped by it unfold through this book.
