The Ph.D. in Urban Planning is a program within the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation (GSAPP) with the actual degree is granted by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS). In it, the student is immersed in the theoretical and methodological tools of the social sciences in order to contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the field of planning. The program consists of two years of coursework, qualifying examinations in the history and theory of planning and in a substantive area (called the sector), and the writing and defense of a dissertation proposal followed by the dissertation and its defense.
