How does design investigation translate to urban design? Design partners Jerome W Haferd and K Brandt Knapp of BRANDT : HAFERD discuss issues related to the collectivity, co-habitation, contamination, and scale in a lecture called Collective Scale. Wendy Andringa of Scape discusses tangible and intangible factors of landscape sites, and ways that can help designers acquire a rigorous understanding of site as design catalyst, in Emergent Site Findings.
Wendy Andringa is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation in Columbia GSAPP’s urban design program, and a Landscape Architect and Associate at SCAPE Landscape Architecture. Since 2005, she has been designing built environments in the New York City region, where she has helped create urban green infrastructure parks, public plazas, innovative playgrounds, higher education facilities, and multi-scalar residential green spaces and amenities. In addition to her practice and teaching, she is a community stewardship advocate with the Gowanus Canal Conservancy, and she also researches cultural and ecological dimensions of post-nuclear sites. She is a New York State registered Landscape Architect.
BRANDT : HAFERD is a Harlem-based architecture and design studio led by Jerome W Haferd & K Brandt Knapp. Their body of work includes academic research and a range of built projects - from the domestic to the workplace to the urban - that challenge the limits of design practice. Performance and Play, Abstract vs. Built Form, Nature and Territory, and the Individual vs. Collective are some of the interests explored in the practice. The studio has been exploring how interests in public space can drive innovation at multiple scales through experimental projects since 2012. Haferd and Knapp were winners of the inaugural 2012 Folly competition held by the Architectural League of New York and Socrates Sculpture Park. Their 2015 installation, caesura, at Harlem’s Marcus Garvey Park was a collaboration with artist Jessica Feldman, and supported by grants, the NYC Parks and local organizations. Their work has been exhibited at various institutions including Storefront for Art & Architecture and AIA New York.
