Sustainable Community Development

A lecture by Matt Mehalik Moderated by Lola Ben Alon

Matt Mehalik is Executive Director of the Breathe Collaborative and its communication platform, the Breathe Project. He has been teaching sustainability and environmental policy as Adjunct Professor of Environmental Policy at the School of Public Policy and Management, Carnegie Mellon University, since 2008. Mehalik’s work integrates complex systems engineering, sustainable communities, environmental policy, and the fundamentals of sustainable product innovation and design in domestic and international settings. He has written multiple journal articles in the areas of engineering sustainability and engineering education and has co-authored Ethical and Environmental Challenges to Engineering with Michael E. Gorman and Patricia Werhane. For the past 20 years, Matt has dedicated himself to creating and managing networks that transform systems for a sustainable, just, fair, and hopeful future.

Tech Talks is a new annual event series hosted by the Building Science and Technology Sequence at GSAPP focusing on the implications of materials, cities, and ethics. The talks are followed by a Q/A panel and showcase work on healthy materials, integrated city systems, and sustainable activism in order to solve the profound technological and human challenges of the 21st century.
