Virtual, Tech Talks

World Building and your activist voice in the city is led by Dan Lockton using New Metaphors cards, a creative toolkit, to explore how metaphors can be a powerful creative way to understand and re-imagine the world around us. Metaphors are often central to the way we think and the language we use, but we don’t always stop to consider the impact they have, and the possibilities of alternative metaphors as ways to think differently and surface other perspectives and voices.

Dan Lockton is a designer and researcher, based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He runs the Imaginaries Lab, a research-through-design studio, and is assistant professor in Eindhoven University of Technology’s ‘Future Everyday’ group. Dan’s work centers on tools and methods for participatory (re-)imagining: helping people, together, create and explore possible futures, imagine new ways to live, and understand ourselves and the world around us better, in an age of crises in climate, health, and social inequalities. He was previously Chair of Design Studies at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, and a tutor at the Royal College of Art, London.

TechSHOPS is an interactive lecture series hosted by the Building Science and Technology at GSAPP that provides hands-on opportunities for students to engage with building technology from a variety of perspectives and scales. Each lecture concludes in a collaborative workshop.

Organized as part of the TechSHOPS, an initiative launched by the Building Science and Technology Sequence of the Master in Architecture Program at Columbia GSAPP.
