Mio Tsuneyama and Fuminori Nousaku

Urban Wild Ecology

Mio Tsuneyama, founder of studio mnm, and Fuminori Nousaku, founder of Fuminori Nousaku Architects will discuss design practices with urban ecosystems, with an emphasis on urban soil. Mio Tsuneyama and Fuminori Nousaku will be introduced by Alireza Karbasioun, who will be joined by Michael Loverich and Antonio Torres in responding to the presentation and hosting the Q&A.

Mio Tsuneyama (born 1983) is a Japanese architect and founder of Studio mnm. She began her architectural studies at Tokyo University of Science (TUS) and graduated from the EPFL in 2008 as Swiss Government International Scholarships student. She served as an intern at Bonhôte Zapata Architectes Genève, from 2005 to 2006 and worked as an architect at HHF Architects in Basel from 2008 to 2012. Following her return to Japan, she has taught at TUS as assistant professor and lecturer since 2013. In 2022, she was invited to teach as a guest professor at EPFL. Her work has been presented at the Japanese Pavilion in the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale, among others.

Fuminori Nousaku (born 1982) is a Japanese architect based in Tokyo and is currently teaching at Tokyo Metropolitan University. Nousaku obtained his Bachelor’s degree in 2005 and his Master’s degree in 2007, both from the Tokyo Institute of Technology. He undertook an internship at Njiric + Arhitecti Zagreb, Croatia, as a part of his doctoral program in 2008. Nousaku went on to establish his architectural firm Fuminori Nousaku Architects in 2010. He received Doctorate in Engineering in 2012 from Tokyo Institute of Technology, where he had the role of Assistant Professor of Architecture from 2012 to 2018. Afterwards, he was Associate Professor of Architecture at Tokyo Denki University 2018-2021. His works exhibitted at the Japanese Pavilion in the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale, He collaborated with artists at the Japanese Pavilion in the 58th Venice Art Biennale.
