Cooperatives and Community Economic Development

Professor of Community Justice and Social Economic Development, Department of Africana Studies, John Jay College of CUNY

Cooperatives benefit communities in many ways in addition to helping members develop assets. This lecture will provide examples of the benefits of cooperatives to communities from Professor Jessica Gordon Nembhard’s book, Collective Courage: A History of African American Cooperative Economic Thought and Practice as well as a case study focused on Cooperative Home Care Associates.

The Lectures in Planning Series (LiPS) is an initiative of the Urban Planning program at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation.
