Fight, Squat, Resist: Housing Alternatives of the Social Movements

The exhibition Fight, Squat, Resist: Housing Alternatives of the Social Movements is the Studio-X Rio’s contribution to the Housing the Majority initiative in which Columbia University’s GSAPP has been investigating the issue of housing and urban inequality on a global scale. It was first exhibited in Rio de Janeiro (2016) and now it is also on view at the Het Nieuwe Instituut, in Rotterdam.

With the voices of the leaders of one important housing movement, MNLM (National Struggle for Housing Movement), the exhibit shows objectives, strategies, victories and political and urban visions. Furthermore, it illustrates to the daily life in the Manuel Congo Squat, in the city center of Rio which is an exemplary case of participatory architectural design and it reveals the testimonies of the residents of the squats and their reality.

The exhibition presents a interview with professors - Juan Herreros and Alejandro Castro Mazarro - and students - Ubaldo Escalante and Axelle Dechelette - about the issues raised by the Fight, Squat, Resist research/exhibition and their implications on the academic as well as practice outcomes.
