Lessons Learned from Hurricane Sandy

Lessons Learned from Hurricane Sandy

Five years ago this week, New York City and the surrounding area was hit by a major coastal storm which left dozens of people dead, thousands of homes damaged or destroyed, and tens of billions of dollars in damage to infrastructure and neighborhoods. What have the design and planning professions learned since Hurricane Sandy? Have our worst hit neighborhoods recovered? Are we better prepared for future disasters? Which projects, programs and policies have helped the city be more resilient? What actions are most needed next? What does resilience look like? This will be an open conversation guided by a group of panelists who have had distinct experiences in the recovery effort.

In conversation with
Thaddeus Pawlowski, Adjunct Assistant Professor GSAPP
Holly Leicht, Empire State Development Corporation and former HUD Regional Director
Sam Carter, Managing Director, Rockefeller Foundation
Ron Shiffman, Professor, Pratt Institute
