Hope exhibition is based on the true story of the Düzce Tenant Earthquake Survivors who emerged victorious from their social struggle for “the right to live in healthy and safe housing” after the Düzce earthquake. By focusing on the concepts of earthquake, participation, cooperative and home, the exhibition forms a record of this 17-year old struggle. This adventure in perserverance is filled with twists that will inspire hope in its audience.
Düzce Hope Workshop, which organized the exhibition, consists of volunteers who responded to an open call from various disciplines such as architecture, planning, construction engineering, communications, sociology and law. Düzce Hope Workshop as an entity has made significant contributions to the advancement of the project by creating various tools to organize the earthquake survivor tenants. The workshop, which functions as a collective, has sought to create confidence that solidarity can function in all areas of life.
The exhibition includes a timeline that details the entire process chronologically, with documents, as well as artistic works. Some of these include Hope Archive that maps out the spatial struggles for justice and Neighborhood Dictionary A to Z which renders visible the challenging terminology that had to be mastered by the Düzce tenants. Campaign Wall, created for the exhibition, invites the Istanbul public to contribute to the construction of the Düzce houses of hope.
