The Universe Emerges From Information: 10^-43 Seconds In The State Of Awareness Of An Exo-Designer, 2055 is an installation of a diagrammatic representation, presenting a very small slice in time (10^-43 or .0000000000000000000000000000000000000001 seconds) in the conscious and unconscious thoughts of a designer in the year 2055.
Just as 10^-43 seconds or, the Planck Epoch, is considered to be the earliest period of time in the history of the universe–a moment poised between instability and the inauguration of a period of unification–so is the mental landscape of this designer, as her ideational activity is poised between wants and pragmatism.
Her thoughts reflect an external world where bodily integrity has no particular value and the boundary between the present and the future is blurred by an ability for the non-material self to reach out and interact with lives in the future (the “exo” in exo-designer).
The diagram suggests (like design as a social phenomenon and a practice) order and certainty when viewed macroscopically (from afar). Up close, it is intimate, sincere, earnest and vulnerable.
Tom Klinkowstein is currently a Professor at Hofstra University on Long Island, NY and an Adjunct Professor in the Graduate Communication Design Department at Pratt Institute in New York City. His work has been exhibited at the AIGA gallery in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Venice Biennale in Italy and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Center for Advanced Visual Studies, among others. Tom Klinkowstein is also the president of Media A, an innovation, design, and consulting group in New York City with clients throughout the world.
Manifold, the organizer of the exhibition, has designed an afternoon, where the future and design related concepts presented by the diagram will be discussed. The program will start at 15:30 on June the 25th, with a lecture by Tom Klinkowstein, which will be followed by a conversation between Bilge Barhana, the translator of the diagram, and Tom Klinkowstein. Afterwards there will be a panel discussion moderated by Ebru Yetişkin with the participation of Tom Klinkowstein, Bager Akbay, Elif Demirci, Erdem Dilbaz and Osman Koç.
