End of Year Show 2018

Avery Hall
May 12, 2018 - May 19, 2018

Each academic year at Columbia GSAPP concludes with a celebration of the work completed by our students. The End of Year Show showcases the best work from GSAPP’s diverse and international student body spanning degree programs in Architecture; Urban Design and Urban Planning; Historic Preservation; Critical, Curatorial, and Conceptual Practices; and Real Estate Development. The expansive display throughout Avery Hall captures both the school’s playful experimentation and disciplinary expertise.

The disciplines and practices of the built environment are at the heart of many of the challenges and opportunities we face today—and not only are they represented at Columbia GSAPP, but together they are pushing the field in new directions. Fueled by the density and diversity of its encounters and perspectives—combining unbridled imagination with disciplinary rigor and incisive critical thinking—the school has built its long legacy of excellence as an urban condenser of ideas. It is committed to exploring the future of architecture, cities, and the environment in a spirit of intellectual generosity.

While at the forefront of architectural education, most of GSAPP’s programs date back to the origins of professional practice in architecture, urbanism, planning, and preservation in the United States. Even from its earliest days, the school has fostered incredible experiments weaving together European artistry and American pragmatism, professional training and liberal education—echoing the best Columbia University has and continues to offer. The ongoing work of the school on display during this annual exhibition is a constant process of discovery and re-invention, as students seek to answer not “what architecture is” but to collectively embody the disagreements about what it could become. The idealism and originality with which our students approach their work and thinking here at Columbia GSAPP is the most important gift they leave us with.
