Domus Magazine has named GSAPP Professor Steven Holl and Toshiko Mori, both founders of New York City-based eponymous firms, Guest Editors for the 2023 edition of the Domus 10x10x10 project. Holl is tenured Professor of Architecture who has taught at Columbia GSAPP since 1981. Mori, who is the Robert P. Hubbard Professor in the Practice of Architecture at Harvard Graduate School of Design, recently lectured at GSAPP during the Fall 2020 semester as part of the Dean’s public programming series. Starting in 2018 with the Italian architect Michele De Lucchi, this editorial initiative engages 10 architects to guest edit 10 issues each over a 10 year period leading up to the magazine’s 100th anniversary. The joint directorship of Holl and Mori—the first since founding architect Gio Ponti and editor Gianni Mazzocchi were at the helm in 1928—is a response to what Domus editorial director Walter Mariotti explained as a need for a paradigm shift following the pandemic and ongoing political, economic, social, and climate crises across the world.
“The idea of a dialogue between two extremely different and in some ways opposite architects who would join together in the prestige of Domus to draft a Manifesto 2023, engaging in a debate that is still the basis of creativity. We wanted to try a kind of collective intelligence – in order to engage ourselves and our audience – of readers and stakeholders in a historical moment in which the challenges of reality are becoming more and more pressing and enigmatic,” said Mariotti.
The first issue guest edited by Steven Holl and Toshiko Mori, titled “The Oceanic,” will be available in January. The December issue currently on newsstands includes a monograph supplement on Holl and Mori prefaced by a manifesto outlining their editorial vision. Titled “Blurred Boundaries,” the manifesto underlines the interconnectedness of architecture, art, and design and promotes open dialogue to introduce “reflective and refractive perspectives.”
“While having different interests, we share knowledge and beliefs, but at the same time the intention to collectively question and improve the situation of architecture in our time. We want our dialogue to distance itself from extreme polarization and instead aim at shaping a community capable of fostering an informed and nuanced exchange of ideas,” said Holl and Mori.
The intertwining of architecture and art is a constant thread in the studios and seminars led by Professor Steven Holl at Columbia GSAPP. During the Fall 2022 semester, Steven Holl and Dimitra Tsachrelia are leading the design seminar “Architecture Apropos Art” which analyzes relationships between historic and 21st-century examples of architecture and art. The advanced architecture studios led by Steven Holl and Dimitra Tsachrelia in previous semesters have focused on the cross‐fertilization of music, painting, sculpture, and architecture in exhibitions halls, concert venues, and astronomical observatories.
