Call for Papers: Architecture and its Stories
Deadline for Proposals: December 13, 2021

AIARG Annual Conference 2022
Hosted by UCD School of Architecture, Planning, and Environmental Policy and the Museum of Literature of Ireland, MoLI (St. Stephen’s Green), March 25, 2022.

‘Architecture and its Stories’ is underpinned by optimism and by openness. We invite contributions relevant to the theme from across the architectural humanities and sciences, and from the adjacent disciplines of geography, literature, philosophy, engineering, history, folklore and sociology. Possible themes include:

  • A critical consideration of oral histories and their role in architectural history
  • The use of narrative techniques to produce new histories, expanding agency to human and non-human actors, incorporating hitherto excluded perspectives and experiences
  • The intersection of narrative, science and technology in the development of built form
  • The role of space and built form in literary narratives - how architecture can drive and shape stories
  • Narrative and climate change – the role of architectural stories in changing minds and making change happen
  • Narrative as a design method and tool – past examples and in current practice

These themes are indicative and by no means exhaustive. We are open to proposals for sessions as well as for individual papers or other forms of presentation. Confirmed sessions include ‘Stories of Obsolescence’ and ‘Architectural (Hi)stories: Telling Tales of the Past’.

The conference is an initiative of the All-Ireland Architecture Research Group (AIARG). It will take place in Newman House, with a combination of in-person and online content.
Those wishing to contribute should send proposals of no more than 300 words to architectureanditsstories@gmail.com by December 13, 2021. Please indicate with your proposal whether you would prefer to attend in-person or present remotely – this will assist us in organising sessions.

Graduate Internships: The Getty Foundation
Application Deadline: January 10, 2022

Getty Graduate Internships are offered in the four programs of the J. Paul Getty Trust—the Getty Museum, the Getty Conservation Institute, the Getty Research Institute, and the Getty Foundation—and in Getty Publications and Getty Digital, to graduate students who intend to pursue careers in the visual arts. Training and work experience placements are typically available in areas such as curatorial, education, conservation, research, publications, web and new media, public programs, digital projects, and grantmaking.

Internships are open to students of all nationalities. Individuals from groups underrepresented across the fields of art history, conservation, and museums are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be:

  • Students currently enrolled in a graduate program (Master of Arts (M.A.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), graduate conservation certificate, or their equivalents for international applicants) in a field relevant to the internship(s) for which they are applying.

or

  • Individuals who have completed a relevant graduate degree (Master of Arts (M.A.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), graduate conservation certificate, or their equivalents for international applicants) on or after January 1, 2019, with postgraduate activities in their field, paid or unpaid.

Internships are located at the Getty Center in Los Angeles or the Getty Villa in Malibu. All positions are full-time for twelve months from September 12, 2022, to September 8, 2023.

Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Architectural Design
Bard College

The department of Architecture at Bard College invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of architectural design. We are especially interested in those whose work treats the practice of design as both a mode of critical inquiry and a creative site for intervening in movements for social liberation and climate justice. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor with an anticipated start date of August 2022.

Applicants for this post are expected to have a proven record of design work that challenges broader expectations of, and possibilities for, the field. The interested candidate should feel comfortable teaching in a design studio setting as well as bringing their own specific line of inquiry into other pedagogical spaces within the program and the college. Candidates are expected to teach at various levels across the curriculum, as well as play a crucial role in shaping the future of the Architecture program.

Candidates should hold at least a Master of Architecture degree (MA, MArch, MSc, Mphil) or its equivalent. A doctoral degree in architecture and relevant design fields is highly desirable. Candidates must have a proven record of teaching experience and an agenda of future engagement in the field through their work. Because Bard is an institution that thrives on cross-disciplinary and collaborative work, the provided teaching statement should elaborate on how the candidate’s work could invite collaborations between other programs and initiatives within the college and across the larger Bard network.
