Weaving Under

The Henry Hudson Parkway is a busy highway. It becomes a viaduct from 72nd Street and lands on the ground at 57th Street. And it is the last section of the historical Miller Highway. An interesting debate for decades is whether to relocate the traffic into a tunnel and demolish the viaduct. The ambition for my project is to reimagine this under-utilized void space and develop a new urban park typology that can be adapted to other places. The space under the viaduct is divided into three major zones: sports, sensory play, and art and performance. The new paths are lifted intentionally and connected with the existing pathways on both sides to unite the park. A ceiling treatment surface is introduced and activated to undulate throughout the space, going up and down to create various spatial and sensorial experiences.
