A Place on Viaduct

NYCHA’s Polo Grounds Towers is a lonely place for 4,000 people with almost no amenities. Yet, the site is full of potential, like almost all big NYCHA developments. With the 155th Street Viaduct on the southern edge, there is an opportunity to have two street levels, bridging the 90-foot height differences between the two levels. Across the street, Rucker Park can be expanded on to further cement its legendary place in basketball culture. Polo Grounds is no longer a lonely place. With the infusion of 1,200 more affordable apartment units, dozens of commercial and communal spaces, a large community center, and a re-organized site plan that invites pedestrians, Polo Grounds can thrive. Grass fields are no longer fenced off. New towers are brimming with colors. Shopfronts and the community center glow brilliantly as the sun sets. Commuters from A&C and B&D trains stop by to shop, play games, or just relax. Polo Grounds becomes a place to be… by the Viaduct.
