A Parish Library for Objects is a reconceptualization of the cathedral typology in the age of late capitalist hyper-consumption, taking the form of a library for objects. The project is a mutation of the Sts. Cyril and Methodius and St. Raphael Croatian Church on 41st and 10th Ave., using the existing pews in both dimension and layout to design a new pew system that rises vertically in the space. As the pew system begins to be repeated vertically, it takes the form of shelving, providing a spatial unit to support the library program. Below the shelves and church service levels, the ground floor is reimagined as the interpersonal spaces of a library, an open place to access technology, hold meetings, and do private work. In addition, the pew system also allows for existing church services to continue as before but on a new, elevated level. The object library would also act as a circular support system, recapitulating tools, furniture, and small appliances for local residents unable to afford certain household necessities.
