The intent was to study different plant species and create a plant-inclusive extension of Avery to increase working space and create an enthusiastically communal and interactive space for students in diverse courses at GSAPP. The selected plant species are highly favorable for the long working hours of architecture students as they would generate oxygen and clean the toxins in the air. The overall design brings the outdoor green environment into indoor working spaces, creating a harmonious working space for students. The form is inspired by a Japanese wooden joinery ‘Kawai Tsugite’ to create receding floors with outdoor spaces facing the courtyard between Fayeweather and Avery. The structural system is designed by modifying the Kawai Tsugite joint to create nodes with multiple posts. The facade is a skin made with terracotta tiles and glazing.
