Between 6th Ave and Greenwich Ave, Jefferson Market Garden sits as an enclosed respite erected in place of a women’s detention facility that was demolished at the wishes of the community. Enveloped by a 9’ tall, cast iron fence, the garden oasis appears private and is rendered unused by the many who pass it daily. Released reimagines an expansion of the oasis, removing the fencing, allowing it to grow into the traffic to slow the pace, and using the sounds and textures of nature to provide a break from lower Manhattan.
