The Bouquet

This interactive intervention located in the center of Chinatown as well as on one side of the Manhattan Bridge, presents an urban-scaled Chinese traditional ink drawing by introducing the meeting of shadow and light, which aims to establish an appealing and interactive Chinese-style tourist attraction within Chinatown, to attract more visitors, stimulate local economic activity, and revitalize this vulnerable community.

The name “Bouquet” has been selected due to its resemblance to the traditional Chinese bridal bouquet, which is also called “Unity Knot.“ In the context of traditional Chinese weddings, the bride and groom invariably hold it together, symbolizing the union of the two in marital bliss. The chosen appellation encapsulates the project’s symbolic representation as a nexus between Manhattan and Brooklyn, the intersection of Chinese immigrants with the fabric of New York, and the linkage between Chinatown and other precincts of New York City.
