Weaving Queer Stories aims to bridge the past and present, weaving together the rich history of New York City’s piers and the vibrant queer community that once thrived there. In homage to Day’s End, I propose the creation of a weaving installation within the framework of this iconic structure. Drawing inspiration from Semper’s four elements of architecture, with a focus on weaving as the enclosure, my project seeks to intertwine the physical, cultural, and social elements of the piers.
This project is designed for the broader NYC community, seeking to educate and engage them in the profound history of the piers and their connection to the queer community. It aims to address various demographics, hoping to foster understanding and appreciation for the diverse stories that unfolded within these spaces.
As a weaving installation, it intends to be an extension of Day’s End and an expansion of the services provided by the organization supporting the queer community. It fills gaps in community engagement, outreach, and cultural competence among staff. Moreover, it endeavors to recapture the precious moments experienced within the piers through the art of weaving.
