“This design is an innovative adaptive architecture system located at Pier 45 on the Hudson River, specifically to address the dynamic water environment in Manhattan, New York, responding to the daily rise and fall of the river currents due to its estuarine location. Challenges include tidal and ecosystem interactions and the flooding threat.
Inspired by ancient armor, the design aims to create a scalable, resilient architecture system that responds to the rise and fall of water and floods.
The incorporation of smart technologies, including generative design and robotic construction, allows the system to be constructed at sea and adapt to the changing water currents. The system also integrates dynamic elements, such as flexible nodes and movable building elements, creating a responsive system to changes in water conditions.
The system is capable of being placed in diverse situations. It can be used as a place for recreation and activities, such as a landscaped park. The suspended modules capture tidal energy and generate electricity through turbine generators. In case of emergency, it can also provide inflatable shelters. This demonstrates the design’s potential for a wide range of applications in complex dynamic environments.”
