In Montauk the downtown beaches are shrinking: On our site visit we learned that in the 60’s a series of bar shaped motels flattened the dunes disrupting the eb and flow of the beach. I want to create an alternate version of the motel that regenerates the dunes, through mobility. The motel modules cluster creating pockets between the buildings for small activities to happen.
We visited a site called the walking dunes in Montauk: that move 3.5” every year due to northwest winds. Realizing this I wanted to make modules with sand as the foundation.
The modules Intakes sand on the top and funnel it to create and mound, the skirt mimics the angle of the mound to rest on top of it. When these modules move, they deposit sand that once held up the buildings. This act helps to regenerate the dunes, the original motels flattened.
The prime structure consists of 3 angled walls that double as sand funnels. The secondary elements: floor, stairs, and skirt insert themselves into the wall.
