The wave dampener brings visual form to the changing salinity levels of an estuary environment while also protecting the coastline from forceful waves. The environmental condition of salinity is demonstrated by the natural phenomenon of density. The plastic pockets are filled with water of differing salinity levels so that they have different densities. When tides bring salt water in twice a day, the pockets float and the network expands. As more of the surface of the water is covered by the plastic network, the greater the effect of the wave dampener, making it most useful during the high tide that also activates it. The restful waters allow for recreation and ecological development.
