Wind Boulevard

The Wind Boulevard, part of this project, creates a continuous cool house regulated by wind speed, utilizing strong southeast summer winds. Initial studies found wind strengthens plants by stimulating supportive cell growth and aids in seed dispersal, prompting the selection of cotton grass and arctic willow for cultivation. For humans, different wind speeds provide cooling effects suitable for various activities. The design incorporates strategic wall orientations and heights to control wind flow and create distinct zones for study, gathering, and plant cultivation. The Cool House features an open plan to maximize airflow, with rammed earth walls for thermal mass and shading, and integrates a greenbelt climate system. This project demonstrates how wind can be harnessed to create sustainable, comfortable microclimates on campus.
