In response to severe overcrowding and inadequate living spaces in Sunset Park, a densely populated area with many Chinese immigrants, this project introduces innovative solutions to enhance living conditions and local food systems. Existing residential units, lacking in natural light, air, and space, often resemble cramped dormitories.
The design component reconfigures the interior layout of these residences, relocating bedrooms to the perimeter to ensure ample light and ventilation, while centralizing communal areas to boost social interaction. Front yards are transformed into multifunctional spaces that blend urban farming with semi-open living areas, optimizing space use and promoting sustainable living by integrating food production into daily life.
The research component explores how low-tech, home-sized urban farms within these areas can shorten food supply chains and improve local food production resilience. These farms are designed to be easily manageable, fitting within residential spaces to provide fresh produce, reduce long-distance transportation needs, lower pollution, and enhance food security, while also offering a critical source of extra income for economically challenged residents.
This project aims to foster a healthier, more connected community, promoting a sustainable, enriched urban lifestyle for Chinese immigrants in Sunset Park and beyond.
