“Each teacher can be a learner, each learner can be a teacher” forms the core philosophy of the School Without Walls—an innovative housing project designed to integrate intergenerational learning into everyday life. In the first phase, based on six fundamental space types, we developed 57 different unit types. Spaces smaller than 250 sq. ft. were categorized as circulation areas, resulting in 41 unique unit types that prioritize flexibility, adaptability, and inclusivity.

By categorizing residents by age groups, the project identifies what they can teach and what they want to learn, fostering a dynamic educational ecosystem within the community. The design employs elements such as columns, walls, slabs, and stairs as primary architectural tools, while circulation spaces like corridors, thresholds, and edges create seamless connectivity. Public spaces—including a shared kitchen, gym, garden, lobby, and laundry—function as interactive learning hubs, promoting knowledge exchange and collaboration.

Located at the intersection of Convent Avenue and West 128th Street, the project emphasizes spatial efficiency and community building. Its modular approach ensures adaptability to diverse needs, encouraging residents to transcend conventional roles and cultivate a culture of mutual learning. The School Without Walls redefines housing as a platform for lifelong education and human connection.
