Wild/Willed: Children Learning Through Risk and Play

The study began with Friedrich Froebel’s play theory and his idea of “gifts.” Since the architectural environment is seen as a sequence of carefully crafted spaces that move children from the security of confined, ordered interiors to the exciting Unpredictability of the outdoors, this flexible and non-linear process helps children to move between sensations of safety and curiosity at their own speed. The architectural philosophy is grounded in a profound conviction regarding the transformative influence of nature and the essential role of danger in human growth. The landscape is characterized by its unforeseen wetlands and diverse ecological strata. And the architectural structure, by introducing the gabion wall system, actively engages in the educational process rather than only functioning as a background. This site is located at the Liberty State Park Train Shed, which is unique as it contains unforeseen security with adventure, and limitations with freedom to cultivate resilience, curiosity, and a profound connection to the natural environment. So we propose a child care center, programmed with Liberty Science Center and the NJEOD, inviting kids 2-4 to come to the site as part of their curriculum.
