The Pavia and Edgar Residence is a workshop space in East Hamptons created to house the late Pavia’s abstract expressionist art.
Influenced by the surrounding site of the Three Mile Harbor, the nearby Maidstone harbour, and their marine docks, the newly proposed artist residency bring the organizational element of the wooden dock within the landscape.
The buildings bring an element of discovery just as Pavia’s sculptures are intended to be viewed as found art objects in a landscape in an organic organization yet intentionally calculated placement.
Focusing on the principles of abstract expressionist principles of Pavia’s period of work:
Movement Brought by the meandering circulation of the visitors
Variation Through tilting buildings and residences to create variation in space and lighting
Balance Through placement and adjustment of each building, east of the dock for visitors and west for the artist residencies.
Repetition By organization of the marine dock on land as a device of wayfinding.
Energy Bringing all previous elements together as one, buildings pushing, pulling, and wading in of the dock.
