Proposing an alternative to the recent reinhabitation of the refinery’s shell by a contemporary office building, the project repurposes not just the facade but the structure and floorplates of the original plant. Building on the logics of the refining process, which gravity fed liquified sugar through a series of vessels, the design reimagines the residual voids left by the removal of the equipment as spaces for light, water, and the flow of air.
Rather than repetitive work spaces, an array of socially oriented programs are integrated to create an environment that repositions labor in relation to care and community.
