Project by Emily Geldermann
This intervention examines the effect of a single motion and how its impact ripples throughout the environment. It is a series of filtration systems that sit beneath the Christopher Street Pier; each system is connected to a tile on a running track above the pier. Whenever a tile is compressed down, it causes a pump beneath it to rotate and press water vertically into a reservoir tank. The water moves from the reservoir and through layers of rock, sand, and concrete in order to remove pollutant particles and then it returns back to the Hudson. This intervention was inspired by the lack of policy in place to protect the Hudson from factories such as General Electric and Con Edison. While it may not seem significant to filter and return water to the same location, the constant motion of the tides will begin to spread the filtered water upstream and downstream.
